Chris and I recently stayed in Portland, Oregon for almost two weeks. We had been there before but not in our RV. We were so excited to go back. It is such a great place for foodies and they have some tasty brews as well. We are glad we set aside some extra money for the month because we ate out way more than normal. Here are a couple of the places we visited and more importantly some of our favorite places to eat and drink.
Going here is a must-do when visiting Portland. They have fun flavor options like the VooDoo Doll which has a stake through its heart and is filled with raspberry jelly or the yummy Marshall Mathers donut (white cake covered M&M’s). Both of our favorites’ is the Old Dirty Bastard (oreos and peanut butter). Be prepared there is normally a line out the door and they are “cash only”, but it is so worth it!
Grilled Cheese Grill
Here you can choose from a variety of specialty grilled cheese sandwiches and then dine in an old converted school bus. The ceiling is also covered with some colorful and interesting artwork.
Pho Van Fresh
I think we could eat here every day. If you haven’t had pho before it’s a Vietnamese noodle soup. Chris had the chicken pho and I had veggie pho and they were both delicious. Perfect for a cold and rainy Portland day.
This is a vegan/vegetarian restaurant that was recommended by our blogger friends the Vegan Voyagers. It has great breakfast/brunch options and is so good even if you are a meat eater. Our favorite item was the Vegano Breakfast burrito which tricked Chris into thinking he was eating real sausage and eggs instead of tofu and a meat substitute. We also tried the berry waffles and they were just as good.
If you like stouts, their chocolate stout is very chocolatey, rich and decadent. I’m not a big IPA fan but I do love coffee so we were both big fans of the Cold Brew IPA which is beer blended with Stumptown Coffee Roasters’ cold brew coffee. If you like cider I would also recommend trying their Fruit Salad Cider.
Fat Head’s Brewery
I had the Bumble Berry Honey Blueberry Ale and it was amazing. It is their #1 beer for a reason. It is very light and refreshing with a subtle sweetness and berry flavor. They even serve it with fresh blueberries floating in it. Chris’s is all about IPA’s and said their IBUsive IPA was pretty good too.
This place specializes in sour beers. If you have never had one, they are brewed to purposely have higher levels of acidity which gives the beer a sour flavor. We didn’t really like them, but our friends, The Roamin Ryans, who are sour beer lovers did. We of course still had a blast hanging out and catching up with friends.
Ground Kontrol Arcade
This was a nostalgic arcade/bar with tons of pinball machines, old Atari and nintendo games like Ms. Pacman (my favorite), The Simpsons, Tetris, Joust and Mario Kart. Chris was really excited to play Area 51. We ended up getting there at 4 which was before the bar opened and there were still kids running around. After 5 it is adults only. It was fun but would have been better if we could have had a drink while playing.
The Saturday Market
This is the largest farmer’s market we have been to on our travels. There are all kinds of vendors fresh fruit and veggies, coffee, food, arts and crafts. It’s a fun place to have breakfast or lunch and walk around and check out some of the different booths.
