Archangel Road Trailhead is located in the Hatcher Pass East Management Area, near mile 14.4 Hatcher Pass Road. The road is managed by the Alaska Department of Transportation in cooperation with Alaska State Parks. The road is approximately four miles long, ending at the Fern Mine gate (private). In the summer months, the road is open to highway vehicles however it is often very rough. High ground clearance vehicles are recommended. The road beyond the Archangel Creek bridge (mile 2.8) is not maintained and very rocky. The Reed Lakes Trailhead is located at mile 2.9, parking is limited and congestion during summer weekends should be anticipated.
During winter months, the road is closed to highway vehicles and becomes a winter recreation trail. The road is usually closed after the first “sticking” snowfall. Year-round parking is available at the pullout along Hatcher Pass Road at the Archangel Road junction. The flat, gentle terrain is ideal for novice level cross-country skiing, walking, and snowshoeing. Sections of the Archangel Road and Trail are open to snowmobiles. The road is often groomed for winter recreation.
